CARE Germany: Urgent earthquake aid for Morocco

On September 9, 2023, Morocco was shaken by a devastating earthquake. With a magnitude of 6.8, it particularly hit the region around Marrakesh and Agadir. Many towns and villages, particularly in the mountainous regions that are difficult to access, were massively destroyed. The number of injured and fatalities is rising steadily and the local people urgently need support. CARE Germany is on the spot in these times of need and is providing humanitarian aid to alleviate the suffering of the people affected.

The current situation in Morocco

The earthquake struck on Friday night and devastated large parts of Morocco. Numerous buildings were destroyed and many people have lost everything. The situation is particularly dramatic in remote areas. Rescue workers are having difficulties reaching the worst-affected regions as the infrastructure has been severely damaged by the quakes.

In addition to the acute destruction, the earthquake poses immense challenges for people: Without a roof over their heads, without clean drinking water and often without access to essential food or medical care, they are dependent on rapid assistance.

CARE Morocco: Help on the ground

CARE has been active in Morocco for over 15 years and has valuable experience in the country. Immediately after the disaster, CARE mobilized its teams to provide aid in the earthquake-affected areas. The people on the ground receive, among other things:

  • Hot meals and drinking water: Many of those affected have lost their homes and are dependent on emergency aid. CARE is providing them with food and clean drinking water to ensure basic supplies.

  • Emergency accommodation: CARE is providing emergency shelters to protect people from the elements. These shelters are particularly essential in the mountainous regions, where the nights quickly become chilly.

  • Hygiene articles and medical aid: The distribution of hygiene products such as soap and disinfectants is also crucial to prevent the spread of disease.

Focus on particularly vulnerable groups

Women and girls as well as people with disabilities are often particularly vulnerable in disaster situations. CARE therefore places a special focus on these groups and ensures that they receive the help they need. Children who have been traumatized by the earthquake are also in urgent need of support. For this reason, in addition to physical aid, CARE also prepares Psychosocial support to help people cope with their traumatic experiences.

Urgent need for essential goods

The situation remains tense and the demand for essential goods is high. The urgently needed relief supplies include:

  • Clean drinking water: After natural disasters, access to clean water is often difficult. CARE ensures that those affected are not dependent on unsafe water sources.

  • Food: Many people have lost their food reserves. CARE regularly distributes hot meals and provides basic supplies.

  • Hygiene articles: Hygiene products such as soap, disinfectant and feminine hygiene products are essential to prevent the spread of disease in the temporary emergency shelters.

Psychosocial support for those affected

The impact of the earthquake on the mental health of those affected is enormous. Many people have lost relatives or are suffering from the shock of the sudden destruction of their living environment. CARE is currently preparing programs for Psychosocial support to help those affected process their experiences. Specialized experts will work on site to support traumatized children and families in particular.

How you can help

CARE Morocco's emergency aid is dependent on donations in order to provide the urgently needed goods and care for the people affected. Every contribution helps to alleviate the suffering of the people and support them during this difficult time.

Here are some ways you can support CARE:

  • Financial donations: Every donation helps to ensure the supply of drinking water, food and emergency shelters. Donate directly on the CARE website.

  • Support from companies: Companies can also make an important contribution through larger donations or fundraising campaigns.

CARE Germany guarantees that the relief supplies reach the people on the ground quickly and directly.

Frequently asked questions

1. how can I donate to the earthquake victims in Morocco?
Donations can be made directly via the CARE website. You can choose between one-off donations or regular support options.

2. which relief supplies are most urgently needed locally?
The most important relief supplies include clean drinking water, food, hygiene articles and emergency shelters.

3. how does CARE help women and children in particular?
CARE places a special focus on supporting women, children and people with disabilities, as these groups are particularly vulnerable in times of crisis.

4. how long is the aid in Morocco expected to last?
Immediate emergency aid will continue until the basic needs of those affected have been met. However, CARE plans to remain on site in the long term to promote reconstruction and psychological support.

5 What is psychosocial support and why is it important?
Psychosocial support helps people who have been psychologically affected by traumatic events such as the earthquake. It helps to process trauma and helps those affected to cope with their experiences in the long term.

Projekt Mariechen: Hilfe für schwerkranke Kinder in Oberfranken

Project Mariechen: Help for seriously ill children in Upper Franconia

Project Mariechen: Help for seriously ill children in Upper Franconia

When a child falls seriously ill, life changes abruptly for the whole family. In addition to the emotional strain, there are often also financial worries, as health insurance companies and government agencies do not always cover all costs. To support families in this difficult situation, the Bayreuth Child Protection Association two years ago the project Mariechen - lucky beetle for seriously ill children was launched. It is aimed at seriously and long-term ill children and their families in Upper Franconia who find themselves in financial difficulties.

Thanks to the WIRTH Foundationwhich supports the project with 5,000 euros, can Marie continue to stand by families in need.

Why the Mariechen project is so important

For many families, the diagnosis of a child's serious illness is not only an emotional shock, but also a considerable financial burden. Although health insurance companies and public authorities cover some of the costs, many services that could make life easier for the affected children are not covered or only partially covered. This is where Marie comes into play. The project helps where regular support ends.

The aim is to ease the financial burden on families so that they can concentrate fully on the care and support of their children. This often involves things that may not seem vital at first glance, but nevertheless make everyday life much easier - such as special therapies, travel costs to clinics or aids that are not covered by health insurance.

Support from the WIRTH Foundation

The joy of Bayreuth Child Protection Association was great when the WIRTH Foundation from Münchberg announced that it would support the project Marie with a donation of 5,000 euros. This generous donation will make it possible to continue the project and support even more families in difficult situations.

"We are very grateful to the WIRTH Foundation for their support," said a spokesperson for Kinderschutzbund Bayreuth. "With this donation, we can ensure that we can continue to help where regular support stops in the coming months."

How the Mariechen project works

The project Marie is aimed at families from Upper Franconia who are in financial need due to the serious or long-term illness of a child. The Bayreuth Child Protection Association plays an important role as a mediator and coordinator of assistance. The affected families can contact the Kinderschutzbund directly and are assisted in applying for support.

The focus is on fast and unbureaucratic help. This means that families in acute emergencies do not have to wait long for support. The Kinderschutzbund team examines each request individually and tries to offer the best possible help - whether through direct financial support or by referring them to other help services.

Mariechen's previous successes

Over the past two years, the project Marie has already helped numerous families in Upper Franconia to cope better with their difficult situations. Whether it's financing rehabilitation measures, covering travel costs to treatments or providing aids, the project has lifted a burden from the shoulders of many families and allowed them to focus on what's important: the well-being of their children.

One example of the successful work of Marie is to support a family whose child had to be treated in a specialist clinic for several months due to cancer. Although the health insurance company covered the treatment costs, the parents' constant trips to the clinic and the associated expenses for accommodation and meals were an enormous burden. Thanks to the support of Marie These costs were covered so that the family could concentrate fully on their child's recovery.

How you can support the Mariechen project

The project Marie relies on donations to continue helping families in need. Every contribution counts and there are various ways to support the project:

  • Financial donations: By donating money, you can make a direct contribution to ensuring that families in Upper Franconia continue to receive the support they urgently need. Any amount helps, whether large or small.

  • Donations in kind: In some cases, donations in kind are also needed, such as special aids or everyday items that make everyday life easier for the families concerned.

  • Volunteer work: Volunteers are also always needed to support the work of the Kinderschutzbund and to stand by the affected families in difficult times.

More information about the project and how you can help can be found on the Website of the Bayreuth Child Protection Association.

Münchberger Tisch: alleviating hardship through food donations

In many parts of society, there are people who barely have enough to live on. Especially in difficult times like these, it is often the poorest who are dependent on support to make ends meet. This is precisely where the Münchberg table to. It helps local people by distributing food to the needy and refugees, thus alleviating the most urgent need. With its work, the Münchberger Tisch ensures that no one has to go hungry - regardless of their origin or living situation.

The important work of the Münchberg table

The Münchberg Table is an offer from the Diaconia Münchberg and is committed to helping people who are unable to meet their daily food needs. In the Münchberg region, the table is a central point of contact for people in need, who are regularly supplied with food here.

The target group is primarily people who are in a precarious financial situation - including single parents, pensioners, the unemployed and refugees. For them, the support provided by the Münchberger Tisch is often an important lifeline in everyday life.

Support for refugees

In recent years, the number of refugees coming to Germany has risen sharply. Many of them arrive without any belongings and are left with nothing. The Münchberger Tisch provides valuable support here by regularly sending food to refugees. This ensures that this particularly vulnerable group also receives the help they urgently need to at least get by on a daily basis.

How does the Münchberg table work?

The Münchberger Tisch is based on a simple but very effective principle: food donated by supermarkets, bakeries and other stores is collected, sorted and then distributed to people in need. This often involves products that are close to their best-before date but are still perfectly edible.

Through cooperation with various companies and private donors

the Münchberger Tisch is able to provide a wide selection of food. These range from fresh baked goods, fruit and vegetables to canned goods and dairy products. The distribution takes place regularly and is organized by volunteers.

organized and implemented.

The role of volunteers

The work of the Münchberger Tisch would not be possible without the commitment of the many volunteers.

not possible. They not only ensure that the donated food is collected and sorted on time, but also distribute it to those in need. For many of these people, the volunteers are not only helpers, but also an important link to the community. They listen, give comfort and offer support where they can.

You too can get involved with the Münchberger Tisch! Every helping hand is welcome, and there are many ways to get actively involved - be it by helping with the distribution, with the organization or by donating your own food.

This help is invaluable, especially for refugees, who often do not have the social safety net to support others in times of crisis.

Balthasar children's hospice: life and laughter, dying and mourning

When parents receive the devastating diagnosis that their child is terminally ill, the world stands still. Nothing is as it once was, and everyday life is dominated by worry about the sick child. In order to support families in this difficult phase of life, the Balthasar Children's Hospice in Olpe am Biggesee - the first children's hospice in Germany. Here, families with a child suffering from a life-shortening illness find a place of security, comfort and joy - from diagnosis to farewell.

A "second temporary home" for families

The Balthasar Children's Hospice sees itself as a place where life takes center stage - even when death is inevitable. Families who come here not only experience care and support for their children, but also valuable time together, in which laughter and joy find a place. These moments are particularly important to ease the heavy burden of such a diagnosis for a while.

In addition to caring for sick children and young people, the hospice offers a "second temporary home" for the whole family. Parents and siblings can move in here to be close to their child and at the same time receive the support and guidance they need. The hospice is a safe place where worries can be shared and the journey of saying goodbye can be taken together.

The work at the Balthasar children's hospice

The Balthasar Children's Hospice offers affected families not only nursing care for their children, but also a wide range of other services that are financed by donations. The health and care insurance funds cover a large part of the care costs, but the hospice relies on donations for many other important services. These include

  • Stays for parents and siblings: So that the family can stay together, relatives are also looked after in the hospice. It is a place where parents can take a deep breath and recharge their batteries, safe in the knowledge that their child is well looked after.

  • Grief counseling: Saying goodbye to a beloved child is one of the most difficult tests that life can present. The hospice offers comprehensive grief counseling for parents and siblings to support them in their pain.

  • Creative and therapeutic offers: In addition to medical care, the hospice offers numerous creative and therapeutic activities that help both the children and their relatives to cope better with the situation. Art and music therapy, as well as playful activities, allow the children to be children again and give the family moments of happiness and closeness.

Donations: An essential part of the work

The extensive work of the Balthasar Children's Hospice would not be possible without the support of donations. Many of the services that make the hospice so special - such as bereavement counseling or accommodation for relatives - are not funded by the health insurance funds. This is why the children's hospice relies on donations and grants to be able to offer the affected families as carefree an environment as possible.

The Wirth Foundation recently made a donation to support the work of the hospice. This support is a valuable contribution that makes it possible to continue to offer families a safe place where they can spend precious time together with their sick child.

A place of life and joy - despite the farewell

The Balthasar children's hospice is not just about death, but above all about life. The children and their families experience precious moments of laughter, play and joy here. The hospice team attaches great importance to living life in all its facets, even when death is inevitable. This approach helps families to draw strength again and again despite all the heaviness and to make the best possible use of the remaining time.

Support and donations for the Balthasar children's hospice

The work of the Balthasar Children's Hospice is inconceivable without donations. Anyone wishing to support the hospice can do so in various ways:

  • Financial donations: Whether one-off or regular donations - every contribution helps to support the children and their families during this difficult time.

  • Volunteer help: Volunteers too

are very welcome at the hospice. They support the team in many areas and help to ensure that families have a carefree time.

  • Support from companies: Many companies take part in fundraising campaigns or other initiatives to support the hospice. Sponsorships for certain services are also possible.

You can find more information about donation options and the work of the Balthasar Children's Hospice on the Website of the hospice.

LAVENIR e.V. Bayreuth: Support for single parents in difficult circumstances

Being a single parent is a huge challenge - emotionally, organizationally and financially. Many mothers and fathers are often overwhelmed by this task, especially if they have no family or social support in their environment. Since 2001, the non-profit association LAVENIR e.V. in Bayreuth is precisely for these parents. By providing care and comprehensive support, the association gives single parents the help they need to create better living conditions for themselves and their children.

The challenges of single parenthood

Single parents face a variety of challenges every day. They have to find a balance between raising their children, work and their own needs. It can easily happen that they feel overburdened or lack the necessary resources to cope with all the tasks. It becomes particularly difficult when there is a lack of family support or financial worries put an additional strain on life.

This is where LAVENIR e.V. comes in. The association offers single parents in Bayreuth not only a point of contact for practical and psychological support, but also a community in which they can feel understood and in good hands.

Sponsorships at the heart of the support

At the heart of LAVENIR e.V.'s work are the Sponsorshipswho are placed at the side of single parents. Mentors are voluntary helpers

who support parents in many areas of everyday life - be it by looking after the children, providing practical support with visits to the authorities or simply acting as a discussion partner

in difficult moments.

How do the sponsorships work?

The sponsorships are designed to build long-term relationships that focus on trust and mutual support. The sponsors work closely with the parents and help them to cope better with everyday life. This is not just about short-term help, but about support that often lasts for months or even years.

Support for children and parents

KIBS: Counselling centre for male* victims of sexualized and domestic violence

Violence in the family or through sexualized assault does not only affect women. Boys* and young men* can also be victims of violence, and yet the fact that they are affected often goes unnoticed. The KIBS contact, information and advice centre in Munich addresses precisely this issue and offers a point of contact for male* victims of sexualized or domestic violence. With its specialized counselling, KIBS helps boys* and young men* up to the age of 27 to come to terms with their difficult experiences and find a way to lead a self-determined life.

Why is an advice center like KIBS necessary?

Although sexualized and domestic violence against boys* and men* is less talked about, studies show that they are also affected to a considerable extent. Many of those affected feel ashamed or isolated, as society often focuses on female victims. This can lead to boys* and young men* not talking about their traumatic experiences or not seeking help.

This is where KIBS comes in. The counselling centre in Munich, which is run by KINDERSCHUTZ MÜNCHEN, offers a safe environment in which affected boys* and young men* can receive support without being stigmatized. Counseling can be anonymous on request to ensure the greatest possible protection and trust for those affected.

Who can contact KIBS?

KIBS is aimed specifically at young males* up to the age of 27 who live in Bavaria and are affected by sexualized or domestic violence. This includes both direct victims and people at risk. Boys* and young men* between the ages of six and 27 who are experiencing or have experienced domestic violence can make use of the counseling services. Their relatives and caregivers are also supported, as they often play a key role in coping with traumatic experiences.

In addition, KIBS offers advice to professionals such as teachers, social workers or educators if they suspect that a boy* in their environment may have been a victim of violence.

What support does KIBS offer?

The KIBS counselling centre works with educational professionals who are specially trained in dealing with traumatized boys* and young men*. Their services include

  • Individual advice and support: KIBS offers individual counseling tailored to the respective needs. The specialists help those affected to process their experiences and work with them to develop strategies to cope with what they have experienced.

  • Anonymous counseling: If desired, counseling can be completely anonymous in order to offer those affected a safe space in which they can discuss their experiences confidentially.

  • Support for relatives: Often parents, siblings or other close caregivers are also affected and need help to understand the experience and support the person affected. KIBS is also there for them with help and advice.

  • Preventive measures: In addition to acute help, KIBS also offers prevention work. Professionals are supported in recognizing abuse or violence at an early stage and taking appropriate measures.

Violence against boys* and young men*: An often underestimated problem

In many cases, domestic and sexualized violence is not directly visible. Boys* and young men* often suffer in silence because they are ashamed or because the social expectation of being "strong" makes it difficult for them to admit their weakness. Many of those affected struggle with the psychological and physical consequences of this violence over the course of their lives, which can lead to long-term problems if left untreated.

The specialized services offered by KIBS give affected boys* and young men* the opportunity to talk about their experiences, receive support and take the first steps towards healing. This type of support is unique in Bavaria and urgently needed.

The importance of anonymous and confidential counseling services

A key aspect of the KIBS service is the option to seek advice anonymously and confidentially. Many boys* and young men* are very reluctant to talk about their experiences - whether out of fear of consequences, shame or because they blame themselves. The anonymity of counseling lowers this threshold and allows those affected to open up freely.

Support from KIBS: What can you do?

The work of KIBS is an important building block in the fight against violence against boys* and young men*. You can also help by drawing attention to the issue or supporting the work of KINDERSCHUTZ MÜNCHEN.

If you are affected yourself or know someone who needs help, please do not hesitate to contact KIBS. You can find further information on the Website of KIBS. Any form of support - be it through education or financial means - helps to ensure that boys* and young men* in need get the help they need.
